Nigerian filmmaker and producer Seun Egbegbe, former husband of actress Toyin Abraham, recently bared his soul about his grim descent into depression and life-threatening experiences during his prison stint.
In a dramatic revelation on a recent podcast with actress Biola Adebayo, Egbegbe, who faced a staggering 44 charges, revealed that despite his lawyer’s Herculean effort to have all but one dismissed, he still found himself imprisoned.
He painted a stark picture of his time behind bars, where he crossed paths with high-profile figures such as former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and Lagos-Dubai socialite Mompha.
Egbegbe shared a harrowing account of his early days in prison, revealing that just weeks into his incarceration, he was plunged into a debilitating depression that teetered on the edge of ending his life. He described those initial days as a waking nightmare, where each moment was a desperate prayer for survival.
Seun also recounted the bleak reality of the “welcome cell,” where new arrivals were greeted with a chilling norm: at least two corpses each morning if twenty new inmates had been admitted the day before.
Amidst the relentless horrors of his imprisonment, Egbegbe said he found a beacon of hope in the steadfast compassion of the Redeemed Christian Church of God members. Their consistent visits, bringing food and solace to the inmates, provided a crucial lifeline in the darkness.
Egbegbe vowed to embark on a nationwide journey to visit prisons, driven by a profound commitment to support fellow inmates.
