The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch has officially announce its highly anticipated 2025 Annual Law Conference.
The flagship event, themed “Reimagining the Practice of Law: Ethics, Innovation, and the Future of Legal Services,” is scheduled to take place from Saturday, June 14th to Friday, June 20th, 2025 at the prestigious Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.
The press conference provided a comprehensive overview of the week-long conference, highlighting its dynamic agenda designed to address the evolving landscape of legal practice in the face of new professional, societal, and technological demands.
Mr. Olabisi Makanjuola, Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, took the opportunity to reflect on the branch’s significant recent achievements. These include the installation of a solar inverter at the Court of Appeal, the impactful work of the vibrant human rights committee, the successful hosting of a free dinner for over 1,000 members in 2024, enhanced member engagement initiatives, a revitalized publicity team, and the acquisition of an 18-seater bus to bolster logistical capabilities. He also lauded the resounding success of the 2024 conference, which attracted over 500 participants to its plenary sessions, expressing strong optimism for an even more impactful turnout and experience this year.
Dr. Tolu Aderemi, the Chairman of the Conference Planning Committee, eloquently elaborated on the theme for the conference, “Reimagining the Practice of Law: Ethics Innovation and the future of Legal Services, Let’s Be Lawyers Again.” He explained that this powerful theme was carefully chosen to inspire a collective return to the fundamental values that underpin the legal profession. According to Dr. Aderemi, it reflects a shared aspiration to restore the dignity, unwavering professionalism, and paramount ethical responsibility that should define the practice of law, particularly at a time when the profession faces increasing public scrutiny.
Attendees of the conference can look forward to a diverse and engaging program commencing on Saturday, June 14th, with an advocacy walk underscoring the branch’s dedication to societal impact and professional unity. The opening day will culminate in a family-oriented “Family Funday,” designed to acknowledge and celebrate the vital support systems of lawyers in the Branch.
A major highlight will be the keynote address delivered by Mr. Richard Atkinson, President of the Law Society of England and Wales. His insights will provide invaluable global perspectives on the reforms currently shaping the future of legal services, with a particular focus on innovation and regulatory modernization.
The first plenary session promises to be a thought-provoking discourse led by Mr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN, a distinguished former NBA President, and featuring prominent legal luminaries including the current NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, Mrs. Funke Adekoya SAN, and Honourable Justice Benedict B. Kanyip. This session will delve into the crucial ethical and professional standards expected of lawyers across both private and public sectors, including members of the esteemed bench.
Dr. Aderemi also announced a significant initiative for all conference participants: an “Ethical Oath Declaration.” This symbolic act signifies a renewed collective commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical conduct and professional integrity within the legal community. Further emphasizing this commitment, an “Ethical Icon Award” will be presented to a distinguished member of the profession who embodies the very values being championed throughout the conference.
The conference agenda boasts a rich and varied lineup of panel sessions addressing critical and contemporary areas of law. A key innovation for the 2025 edition is the introduction of subject-specific masterclasses, hosted by leading law firms and esteemed industry professionals. These in-depth sessions will provide deeper technical engagement with rapidly evolving fields such as data privacy, entertainment and sports law, renewable energy, green growth, and governance.
Another notable feature is the Regulatory Clinic, scheduled for Day 4. This unique platform will facilitate direct interaction between legal practitioners and key regulatory agencies, including the Lagos State Lands Bureau, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The aim of this session is to foster mutual understanding and collaboratively improve the quality-of-service delivery across the entire legal value chain, moving beyond mere critique.
On Day 5, the conference will focus on leadership and capacity-building within the branch. Aspirants for the esteemed position of Branch Chairman will participate in an open forum, providing a platform to share their practical strategies for the future advancement of the NBA Lagos Branch. The same day will also feature dedicated sessions tailored for In-House Counsel and the Young Lawyers’ Forum. In-house legal professionals will explore common challenges within corporate legal departments and discuss actionable solutions, while young lawyers will benefit from focused training on ethics, professional discipline, and overall professionalism.
Beyond the intensive legal sessions, the branch will also host the elegant Chairman’s Dinner and Elders’ Night, an evening dedicated to celebrating the branch’s institutional milestones and honoring veteran lawyers who, due to age or health, may no longer be actively engaged in daily practice. The conference will culminate in a vibrant Closing Party, celebrating the valuable insights gained and the strong camaraderie fostered throughout the week.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Aderemi emphasized that the 2025 NBA Lagos Branch Annual Law Conference is more than just a traditional legal gathering. It is envisioned as a powerful movement to reawaken the conscience of the legal profession, wholeheartedly embrace innovation, and ultimately restore the dignity and public trust in the Bar.
