President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and the independence of the Nigerian judiciary.
Speaking through the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, at a book launch in Abuja held in honour of the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the President said legislative measures are underway to support structural reforms and ensure expedited access to justice for all Nigerians.
Tinubu commended Justice Ariwoola’s unwavering dedication to nation-building, stating that the retired jurist viewed his role not merely as an appointment but as a call to national service.
He noted that many of Justice Ariwoola’s judgments continue to resonate across Nigeria’s legal landscape, particularly in high-profile constitutional and contractual disputes. He further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving judicial independence.
Also speaking at the event, the chairman of the occasion and former President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, underscored the significance of leadership, accountability, and legacy.
He stated that the book not only captures Justice Ariwoola’s legal achievements but also serves as a vital record of institutional memory. It offers insight into judicial decisions that have shaped Nigeria’s constitutional, electoral, and administrative law.
The book, co-authored by Dr. Charles Mekwunye, SAN, and Ayo Olanrewaju, Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports, NWLR, offers a comprehensive account of Justice Ariwoola’s years of service in Nigeria’s appellate courts. It also highlights his pivotal contributions to the development of the nation’s jurisprudence.
The book was reviewed by Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, SAN, who lauded its depth and intellectual richness. “One can say, with the benefit of hindsight and the supporting evidence and testimony contained in this book, that this is a sobering reflection,” he remarked.
During the launch, co-author Dr. Mekwunye explained that the book critically examines Justice Ariwoola’s judgments, revealing his judicial philosophy and long-standing impact. “This work sheds light on who Justice Ariwoola is, as seen through the lens of his judicial activities,” he said.
He emphasized that Justice Ariwoola, known for his strict adherence to legal precedent, never delivered a dissenting judgment throughout his career, yet consistently advanced legal principles through his consensus opinions.
Calling for reform, Dr. Mekwunye stressed the urgent need for the Federal Government to address the plight of detainees who have languished in correctional facilities for years without trial.
He decried the appalling reality of individuals spending up to nine years in detention without being formally charged or granted bail, describing it as a gross violation of fundamental human rights and a blemish on the justice system.
The senior advocate emphasized that true judicial reform must prioritize timely and equitable access to justice, especially for the most vulnerable.
“The government must address the unjust and prolonged detention of prisoners who have not been brought before a court for a fair hearing,” he said.
In his remarks, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. He reaffirmed his belief in the sanctity of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man.
He underscored the critical role of judicial officers in upholding the rule of law and urged young legal practitioners to remain steadfast in integrity, discipline, and service.
“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done in every courtroom across the nation,” he declared.
