American R&B star Chris Brown has been released on bail by a London court after being charged with grievous bodily harm over an alleged nightclub assault in 2023.
The Grammy-winning singer is accused of launching an “unprovoked attack” on a music producer with a tequila bottle at Tape nightclub in Mayfair.
Brown, 36, was arrested in Salford last Thursday and had been in custody since, after being denied bail initially. However, at a hearing on Wednesday at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Tony Baumgartner granted his release on strict bail conditions, including the payment of a £5 million security fee—£4 million immediately and another £1 million within a week.
A security fee is a financial guarantee to ensure a defendant returns to court. Mr Brown could be asked to forfeit the money if he breaches bail conditions.
Though Brown did not attend the hearing, the court confirmed that he can continue with his planned world tour, which begins in Amsterdam on 8 June. UK dates include shows in Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Glasgow, and London.
As part of his bail conditions, Brown must reside at an address known to the court, refrain from contacting the alleged victim, avoid the Tape nightclub, and not apply for new international travel documents. He must also surrender his passport unless actively touring.
Brown will return to court on 20 June, between performances in Cardiff and London. His co-defendant, 38-year-old American performer Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, is expected to appear alongside him.
Best known for hits like Run It, Loyal, and Under the Influence, Brown has not yet entered a plea in the case.
